Court PC's civil and domestic databases also house archived dockets for hundreds of thousands of cases purged from the CT Judicial Department's website. In the past, cases in the Judicial Department's database were removed through periodic purges if a final disposition had been entered and at least six months had passed with no further activity in the case. Computerized case records may now be purged from the Judicial Branch's online data on an ongoing basis as they become eligible. These practices drastically reduce the number of case records displayed in the Judicial Department's online database. For example, prior to the last periodic purge, there were 309,000 civil cases in the active database. After the purge, only 145,000 civil cases remained in the database, about 45% of the records that were previously available.
This happens because the Judicial Branch applies provisions of CT Practice Book sec. 7-10 et seq., governing the retention of physical paper files, to its computerized records. Cases in which a judgment has been entered may be retained in the computer record for up to ten years. However, the vast majority of cases (about 90%) are disposed by withdrawals or dismissals, and these cases may be eligible to be purged within one year of the disposition.
Court PC's database of docket records permits researchers to retrieve not only the basic case information for purged CV and FA cases, but also to see a history of all filings in those cases. Searches may be conducted for all rulings by a judge or by type of motion/filing as well as case-by-case docket reports. This data is typically used for litigation support, due diligence, pre-employment or other background checks and investigations, etc.
