Court PC's civil and domestic databases have been supplemented with archives of dockets from cases purged from the CT Judicial Department's website. Cases in the Judicial Department's database are subject to periodic purges once a final disposition has been entered and six months have passed with no further activity in the case. These purges can significantly affect the number of case records available in the Judicial Department's online database. For example, prior to the last purge, there were 309,000 civil cases in the active database. After the purge, only 145,000 civil cases were left, or only about 45% of the records that were previously available.
Computer records of cases may now be purged on an ongoing basis as they become eligible, following CT Practice Book sec. 7-10 et seq., governing the retention of physical paper files. Cases in which a judgment has been entered may be retained in the computer record for up to ten years (note the new "Search archives" feature on the Party Name search page). However, the vast majority (up to 90%) of cases are disposed by withdrawals or dismissals, and these cases may be eligible to be purged within a year of the disposition.
Court PC's purged case docket databases allows researchers to retrieve not only the basic case information for purged CV and FA cases, but also to see a history of all filings in those cases. Searches may be conducted for all rulings by a judge or by type of motion or filing in addition to case-by-case docket reports. Records of appearances for pro se parties are also available as part of the archived data. This data is typically used for litigation support, due diligence, pre-employment or other background checks and investigations, etc.
