Court PC's civil and domestic databases include archived dockets for hundreds of thousands of cases purged from the CT Judicial Department's website. Computer case records may be purged from the Judicial Branch's online database on an ongoing basis as they become eligible. This practice dramatically lowers the number of case records displayed in the Judicial Department's online database. Prior to the last purge, there were 309,000 civil cases in the active database. After the purge, only 145,000 civil cases remained in the database, about 45% of the records that were previously available.
The Judicial Branch applies CT Practice Book sec. 7-10 et seq., governing the retention of physical paper files, to its computerized records. Cases in which a judgment has been entered may be retained in the computer record for up to ten years. However, the vast majority of cases (about 90%) are disposed by withdrawals or dismissals, and these cases are eligible to be purged less than one year after the disposition.
Court PC's database of docket records permits researchers to retrieve not only the basic case information for purged CV and FA cases, but also to see a history of all filings in those cases. Searches may also be conducted for all rulings by a judge or by type of motion as well as case-by-case docket reports. This data has been used for litigation support, investigations, title searches, etc.
